With our first born, we were given all kinds of advice on the things we should be using and it honestly created a lot of arguments because my husband and I just didn’t know what to believe. From sleeping to feeding, the advice can be endless.
With breastfeeding, while I read a lot, it almost felt like a “just wing it” kind of process. My son and I had a wonderful breastfeeding relationship and I hope to have the same with my daughter due in November. Here are my tips for new breastfeeding moms to help you get started on your journey.

Trust Your Body
I had no idea what I was doing at first. Like I said before, I just tried it. I kept reading and had to find my way through the mountain of information readily available at my fingertips.
The information out there is great. It’s plentiful and can really help you when you need it. It can also be a lot to take in at one of the most trying and exhausting periods in your life otherwise known as the fourth trimester.
In the end, I trusted my body and I trusted that I could make it a week, a month, a year. And I did.
Get A Support System
Seriously. Get a support system.
Find women who know what you’re going through. Find women who have recently given birth and are also up at 2am. Find a lactation consultant and check with your hospital about new moms groups!
One of the reasons I feel I was so successful with breastfeeding my son was my Birth Month Club that I found online while pregnant. We talked to each other daily. Hourly, even. Someone was always around if there was a struggle or I just needed to complain about how long my son was feeding for at 1am.

Eat and Drink Water!
I severely underestimated how much time I’d have on my hands with a newborn. My husband would get home from work, ask what I ate and drank, and I’d look at him like “I can’t remember what food is.”
We came up with the solution of one handed snacks and buying the largest mug available.
I would fill a basket up in the morning, set it up at my spot, and grab as I went along. We made breakfast sandwiches on Sunday and I would quickly heat them up for an actual meal.
Eating and drinking water is a necessity for both mom and baby. Set reminders to eat. Prepare the night before. If you have to download an app to track your food and drink, do it!
Get A Comfy Nursing Spot At Home
When I was pregnant, we did buy a nice glider with a gliding foot rest that ended up being my go-to spot a lot of the time. I had to use pillows and blankets to make it a bit more comfortable for me.
Truth is, some days I didn’t want to sit in that glider. I’d create a nice spot on the couch with my pillow and my trusted basket o’ food and water and it was glorious. It helped being comfy already in a nice sleeping spot so I could just put my son in his bassinet next to me and lay my head down after a feeding.
Create a spot that works fro you.
