9 home gym must haves

Living in an apartment means I’m short on space and being a mom means I’m short on time.

The home gym is definitely a blessing for a busy mom. Having some home gym essentials in our apartment helps me keep up with my workouts without taking up a whole lot of space. I can just grab my equipment and do a short workout while my youngest naps and my son does quiet time by himself.

Plus with me staying home, I truly don’t want to spend the extra money on a gym membership especially if it might not be feasible for me to go every day. And I work out every single day!

Here are my home gym must haves to help get you started!

9 Home Gym Must Haves

Here are my essentials for creating an at home gym when you’re low on space! These will help you sweat and get a workout in when you’re low on space and time!

Adjustable Dumbbells

Adjustable dumbbells are perfect for just starting out and to increase as you get stronger. You can also go with just a specific weight. I have 5lb hand weights which are perfect for me.

Resistance Bands

I love my resistance bands! I pretty much add them to any squat or lunge for extra resistance. And they’re great for travel.

Kettlebell

Love a Kettlebell workout! It’s a full body workout and a Kettlebell can double as a medicine ball (without the slamming!) too. It’s perfect for someone in an apartment or anyone low on space!

Stability Ball

You may already have a balance ball from birthing babies. It’s a great tool to work on your core and posture.

Foam Roller

I really didn’t know what a foam roller was until recently but I’m hooked! A foam roller is a performance and recovery tool that offers an affordable way to achieve a deep tissue massage. It’s great after a workout to help heal your muscles recover! It can help with any chronic pain you may have too.

Jump Rope

Just 10 minutes of jumping rope does the same work as a 30 minute jog!

Exercise Videos and Apps

I’m big on exercise videos and apps! I religiously use two apps that do cost a little extra but I find are very effective.

Here are my top apps for exercising at home:

TRX Suspension Trainer

The TRX Suspension Trainer is full-body training system that helps you build muscle while perfecting your posture and alignment. It comes with an app or you can look up workouts on YouTube. The best part? You need a sturdy door to hold it into place. Sure you can drill something into the ceiling if you have the space but a door is sufficient!

Yoga Mat for Hard Floors

If you have hard floors, consider buying a yoga mat to help create comfort when you’re working out or stretching. Not just for yoga! I use my yoga mat at our building’s gym so I can do any ab or floor work.

Other Home Gym Essentials

Here are a few more items you’ll love to have for your home gym!

  • Sliders – Great for core workouts!
  • Medicine Ball – I personally just use my kettlebell instead.
  • Core Wheel – This is great if you have wrist troubles.

Upgrade Your Home Gym

Call this my at home gym wish list, but if you’re not short on space and really want to have everything right under your roof here are some items you’ll want to consider adding:

Protip: Use a sturdy dining room chair for step ups! Any time I see the need for a home bench but realize how little space I have, I just use our sturdy wood chairs!
